GEAR UP OGS

GEAR UP OGS is a new school bike safety initiative that encourages students to bike to school safely and confidently. Students in Grades 3 - 5 will receive bike safety training in school and, starting this spring, will have the option to bike to school in neighborhood-based “bike trains” led by trained parent volunteers. Students in Grades K – 2 are welcome to join their neighborhood train, but they must be accompanied by a designated parent/caregiver who is not volunteering as a chaperone (conductor/caboose) of the train ride. Join us for a virtual parent training session to learn more about the program and how you can get involved!

DISTINGUISHED TEACHER AWARDS
Nominations Due: Thursday, March 5
Do you know a teacher, social worker, guidance counselor, instructional coach, or specialist that deserves consideration for the 2026 Distinguished Teacher Awards? It is not too early to start the process. The main emphasis in identifying a distinguished teacher is the quality of work with students. To learn more about the criteria and eligibility requirements, read the 2026 Nomination Instruction Packet here. If you would like to nominate a teacher, reach out to Dr. Bencivengo as she'd be happy to assist in the nomination process.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Media Center
Ms. Tocabens would love volunteers every Thursday from 10:30 – 11:30 AM to help organize the library. Please sign up here if you can help.
Green School Food Rescue
We're also looking for parent volunteers to support Green School's Food Rescue program, which donates leftover cafeteria food to the Stamford Yerwood Center. Volunteers are needed Wednesdays and Fridays, any time between 2 – 3:30 PM. The commitment is about 30 minutes, with a quick pickup at OGS and a drop-off just 10 minutes away. It’s a great activity to do with kids and a simple way to reinforce conservation and community empathy. Sign up here!
The success of the OGS PTA depends on the dedication of hundreds of volunteers. Whether you have an hour or more time to help, we’d love for you to join us. You can explore these and other opportunities to get involved, including Mac’s Market, on the Volunteer Page.
OGS RENOVATION UPDATE
On Wednesday, February 4, the RTM overwhelmingly approved the final funding request for the OGS renovation, ensuring that construction is on track to start in April! There was strong support from the District 6 RTM members and the OGS Building Committee did a fantastic job of educating the RTM members on all things related to the project. The Building Committee is now working on finalizing the Building Permit and contracts for the project.
Please stay tuned in the coming weeks for additional details. Until then, please take the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the project website, which has a wealth of information on the project phasing, FAQs, and all the work done to date. You are also more than welcome to attend a Building Committee meeting, which typically occur every two weeks. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 17, at 7 AM in the Media Center.
