Ride together. Ride safely. Join your neighborhood bike train!

GEAR UP OGS is a school bike safety initiative designed to help students bike to school safely and confidently. Beginning Friday, April 17, 2026, students in Grades 3 – 5 may bike to school in neighborhood-based bike trains led by trained parent volunteers.

Students in Grades K – 2 are also welcome to participate, but they must ride with a parent or caregiver who is not serving as a volunteer.

How Bike Trains Work

Students will be assigned to a route and neighborhood station stop. Families will then be added to a WhatsApp group for their route to receive updates from parent volunteers.

On bike train days:

  • Parent volunteers depart the first station at 8:00 AM
  • Volunteers will send a WhatsApp message when the train is leaving
  • Students must be ready at their station when the train arrives
  • The train cannot wait for late riders
  • The group will ride to school together, arriving at approximately 8:20 AM

Student Expectations

Students participating in Bike Trains must:

  • Wear a helmet and appropriate biking shoes/clothing
  • Wear a GEAR UP OGS safety vest or other high-visibility clothing
  • Complete an ABC bike check with a parent or caregiver before each ride
  • Arrive on time and be ready when the train reaches their stop
  • Follow all bike train safety expectations, including yielding to pedestrians, riding single file and staying between the lead rider and caboose unless otherwise directed
  • Listen to instructions from parent volunteers
  • Walk their bike on the plaza
  • Be respectful to all participants

Families are responsible for making sure their child’s bike is in good working condition.

Parent volunteers will notify the school if a student is not riding safely. Students who are unable to follow safety expectations may be required to ride only when accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

How to Register

Step 1: Complete the 2025 – 26 OGS PTA waiver, if you have not done so already. Students may only participate if a waiver is on file.

Step 2: Sign up here to register your child, be assigned a bike train route, and be added to the appropriate WhatsApp group.

Note: Students in Grades K – 2 may register, but they must ride with a parent or caregiver.
